RC2 Windows and Safety Glass for Ground Floors

Security comes from a tested combination of frame, hardware, handle, glazing and installation. A few mushroom cams or a laminated pane do not turn an otherwise standard window into an RC2 assembly.

01

What an RC classification describes

Resistance classes are assigned to tested complete constructions under defined attack methods and times. The declaration applies to the tested product range and permitted dimensions, not to every visually similar window from the same brand.

Ask whether the quotation specifies a certified RC2 configuration and request the relevant documentation. Marketing phrases such as security hardware or anti-burglary glass are not equivalent to a resistance class.

02

Hardware and handle must work together

Security locking points engage with reinforced keeps around the frame. Their number and position are system-specific, and the frame must transfer forces without pulling fixings from weak substrate.

A lockable or protected handle can resist manipulation from the glass side, but it cannot compensate for an open tilt position. Everyday locking habits remain part of the protection strategy.

03

Safety glass and attack-resistant glazing are different briefs

Laminated glass holds fragments together when broken and can serve impact-safety needs, depending on its classification. Attack-resistant glazing uses a specified laminate build-up as part of the tested security assembly.

Tempered glass behaves differently when broken and should not be substituted on the assumption that all safety glass offers the same burglary resistance. State the required performance rather than a generic glass name.

04

Installation anchors the security package

A resistant frame needs appropriate mechanical fixing into a sound wall. Large unfilled gaps, weak blocks or unsuitable fixings can allow the complete element to move even when its hardware is strong.

The installation method should follow the tested or approved guidance for spacing and substrate. Security fixings must coexist with thermal supports and layered perimeter sealing.

05

Protect the routes that are realistically accessible

Prioritise ground-floor windows, secluded patio doors, basement openings and areas hidden from neighbours. Lighting, alarms, shutters and landscaping can supplement resistance by increasing detection and delaying access.

LUPOL can discuss enhanced window hardware and glazing for made-to-measure openings. Where a certified class is required, make that requirement explicit before quotation so every component and document can be checked.

The key takeaway

Specify security as a documented complete assembly and install it into a suitable wall. Combine resistance with sensible locking, lighting and detection instead of relying on one visible component.

Frequently asked questions

Does laminated glass make a window RC2?

No. RC2 applies to a tested complete window with specified frame, glazing, hardware, handle and dimensions. Laminated glass alone does not establish the class.

Are roller shutters a substitute for secure windows?

They can add another obstacle, but ordinary shutters are not automatically attack-resistant. Use documented products and a layered security plan.

Can existing windows be upgraded to RC2?

Some components may be improved, but a retrofit is not automatically equivalent to a factory-tested RC2 window. Ask a specialist what can be documented for the existing system.
