Preparing openings for windows and doors: before the survey and installation
A window opening is rarely just a width and a height. It also contains uneven masonry, future plaster, external insulation, a sill, perhaps a shutter box and a finished-floor level that currently exists only as a pencil mark. The more of this information is settled before the final survey, the fewer improvised decisions are left for installation day.

A production survey needs reliable reference levels
Mark the finished-floor level clearly before the surveyor arrives. This is essential at entrance doors and floor-level terrace exits. The difference between the structural slab and final flooring determines the threshold height and the support layers beneath it.
Keep the current floor plans and window schedule on site. If openings have changed during masonry work, handwritten notes on an old drawing are not enough. Opening number, handing, sash layout, shutter provision and sill type should agree in one controlled document.

The reveal must be sound, even and capable of being sealed
Loose mortar, deep voids and projecting blocks make both fixing and continuous sealing difficult. The reveals do not need a decorative finish, but their surfaces must be stable and prepared for the installation system agreed with the contractor. The required preparation can differ between membranes, tapes and other tested connection systems.
Measure an opening at several points because masonry often narrows under the lintel or runs out on one side. Do not alter it casually after the final survey. Even a small levelling coat changes the production clearance and should be reported to the person responsible for the order.
The window position follows the complete wall build-up
Frame position depends on wall construction, insulation thickness and the way the reveal will be finished. A single-leaf wall, a masonry wall with deep external insulation and an existing facade in a renovation each need a different answer. The phrase ‘warm installation’ is therefore not a design detail by itself.
The installer needs to know the wall material, frame size, expected loads and weather exposure. These determine the fixings, support and the internal and external sealing layers. The objective is a durable connection around the whole perimeter, not simply a gap filled with expanding foam.
Draw the base of doors and terrace units separately
There is usually more depth to resolve below a low threshold than below a standard window. The support must transfer the element’s weight, limit the thermal bridge and connect with floor insulation. A random stack of packers is not a support design, particularly below a heavy sliding panel.
Outside, the terrace, landing or steps add another set of levels. Their fall and drainage need to be known before the door is fitted. When the window contractor sees only a bare slab and the terrace installer arrives months later with a different build-up, the conflict commonly appears at the first period of driving rain.

Shutters, sills and cables are not decisions for later
A roller-shutter box changes the head detail, insulation and sometimes the frame position. The external sill needs a defined connection below the frame and sufficient projection beyond the finished facade. Inside, plaster thickness and the way the sill meets the frame also consume real space. None of these parts is dimension-free.
For powered shutters, establish the supply side and cable route. A cable left in the middle of the reveal may conflict with a fixing or require an avoidable joint. Coordination is not the most visible part of a build, but it is what keeps installation day moving.
A short opening inspection before delivery
Walk every opening with the survey record several days before installation. Check that nobody has added mortar, chased a service into the reveal or blocked the access route with pallets. The substrate should meet the moisture and cleanliness requirements of the selected materials, while loose cables and debris need to be removed from the work zone.
Finally, agree a safe unloading and temporary storage area. Window units should not be left leaning casually against wet masonry. For large elements, confirm lifting equipment and staffing in advance. This protects the product and prevents the window installation from delaying every trade that follows.
