Window Ratings Explained: Uw, Ug, Uf, Rw, g and Lt

Window data sheets become useful once each symbol is connected to a real outcome. Some figures describe heat flow, one describes sound reduction, and others show how much sun and daylight pass through the glass.

Uw, Ug and Uf are related but not interchangeable

Uw is the thermal transmittance of the complete window, including glazing, frame and their edge connection. Ug applies to the glazing and Uf to the frame. Lower values indicate less heat flow through the assessed component.

A quotation that advertises only Ug can make the window appear better than the complete product. Ask for Uw at the proposed dimensions because the glass-to-frame ratio changes with size and division.

Rw describes airborne sound reduction

Rw is a laboratory-weighted sound reduction index stated in decibels. Higher is generally better, but real traffic and low-frequency noise may require adaptation terms shown alongside the headline figure. Two windows with the same pane count can have different acoustic performance.

Airtightness and installation are essential. Sound can bypass excellent glass through trickle vents, poorly adjusted seals, shutter boxes or gaps around the frame, so the whole elevation must be considered.

The g-value controls useful and unwanted solar heat

The solar factor g describes the proportion of incident solar energy that reaches the interior through the glazing. A higher value can contribute useful winter gains; on large sunny façades it can also increase overheating risk.

Do not specify the lowest g-value everywhere. Orientation, external shading, room depth, thermal mass and cooling strategy should guide the decision. External shutters can provide variable control that fixed solar-control glass cannot.

Lt tells you about visible daylight

Light transmittance Lt indicates how much visible light passes through the glass. Coatings, laminates, tints and extra panes can reduce it. The perceived brightness of a room also depends on frame sightlines, window position and internal surface colours.

For a kitchen, workspace or deep-plan room, ask for Lt alongside the thermal data. A slightly different glass specification or a slimmer frame can materially improve daylight without enlarging the opening.

Turn the data sheet into a room-by-room brief

Begin with the building target for Uw, then add acoustic, safety, privacy and solar requirements by elevation. A ground-floor bedroom beside a road needs a different glass build-up from a quiet first-floor bathroom even when both openings have the same dimensions.
