Choosing Windows for an Energy-Efficient or Passive House

High-performance windows are part of an energy concept, not a standalone badge. Their size, orientation, opening pattern, installation and shading must support the building envelope as a whole.

Define the energy target before requesting prices

Ask the designer or energy assessor for the required whole-window Uw and any project-specific airtightness or thermal-bridge assumptions. Passive-house ambitions may require certified or modelled junctions, while a good low-energy home may allow a broader range of systems.

Use the same dimensions and divisions when comparing products. A test value from a reference window should not be presented as the guaranteed value for every custom element.

Balance insulation with solar gains

South-facing glass can contribute winter heat when the solar factor and shading strategy are designed together. North-facing windows receive little direct solar gain, so insulation and daylight often dominate their specification. East and west glazing can create intense morning or afternoon overheating.

Optimising only for the lowest Ug can produce dark rooms or reduce useful heat. Energy modelling should test glass area, g-value, Lt and external shading rather than applying one glass unit to every elevation.

Keep frames efficient and openings purposeful

Every opening sash adds hardware and seals and usually has wider sightlines than a fixed pane. Use opening windows where purge ventilation, cleaning or escape requirements justify them, and consider fixed sections where maximum glass and simplicity are beneficial.

Large units need structural verification, especially on exposed sites. Wind load, glass thickness, frame reinforcement and installation supports must be resolved before the architectural opening is finalised.

Make the junction airtight and thermally continuous

The declared window value assumes the product itself; the wall junction determines how it performs in the building. Correct support, an insulated middle layer, an airtight interior connection and a weather-resistant exterior connection protect the perimeter.

Position within the wall build-up affects the thermal bridge. Agree the sill support, membrane continuity and sequencing with insulation and façade contractors before windows arrive on site.

Commission the complete package

After installation, inspect operation, gasket compression, drainage, seals and junction finishes. Where the project requires it, airtightness testing and thermal imaging can identify defects while access remains possible.
