Lift-and-Slide vs Tilt-and-Slide Patio Doors

HST and PSK doors can both connect a room to the terrace, but they operate differently and suit different opening sizes, thresholds and budgets. Choosing by appearance alone misses the daily-use differences.

01

How the two mechanisms work

An HST leaf lifts from its seals when the handle is turned and then rolls along a track. A PSK leaf first disengages from the frame and then slides parallel; depending on the system, it can also provide a tilt ventilation position.

The different movement affects handle sequence and user feel. Test a full-size display with the intended leaf weight, because a small sample cannot reproduce the momentum of a large glazed panel.

02

Opening size and architectural effect

Lift-and-slide systems are commonly selected for wider, heavier glazed openings and a strong connection to the garden. Their frame and glass limits still need checking against wind load, pane weight and the exact layout.

PSK can be a practical option for more moderate openings where tilt ventilation and controlled cost are priorities. Its sash movement needs clear internal space during operation and careful user handling.

03

Threshold and accessibility

HST systems can offer a low transition when the threshold, floor build-up, drainage and terrace level are designed early. A low threshold is not achieved by burying an ordinary frame without waterproofing or support.

PSK generally presents a more conventional frame threshold. If step-free movement is a project requirement, confirm the complete certified detail rather than relying on the word low in a brochure.

04

Sealing, security and maintenance

Both systems require correct installation, drainage and hardware adjustment. Tracks should be kept clean and moving parts serviced; forcing a PSK sequence or allowing grit to build up under rollers shortens reliable operation.

Security is configuration-specific. Ask about locking points, handle protection, safety glass and any tested resistance class for the complete element rather than assuming that a large, heavy door is inherently resistant.

05

Choose by use case and total scope

Map who will use the door, how often it opens, the required clear passage, furniture layout and whether external shading is planned. Include structural preparation, threshold support, waterproofing and handling in the budget.

LUPOL can size made-to-measure patio solutions with the surrounding windows. An early opening review prevents a late compromise between floor level, structure and the selected sliding mechanism.

The key takeaway

Choose HST for large, frequently used openings and a carefully designed low transition; consider PSK for moderate openings and tilt functionality. Verify the exact configuration, not just the acronym.

Frequently asked questions

Are HST and HS the same type of door?

They are commonly used market abbreviations for lift-and-slide systems. The exact product specification and tested performance matter more than the language variant.

Is a lift-and-slide door easier to operate?

It is designed to move large leaves smoothly once lifted, but ease depends on leaf weight, hardware, installation and maintenance. Test the proposed system where possible.

Can a PSK door have a flush threshold?

PSK systems generally use a more pronounced frame threshold. If step-free access is essential, ask for a verified project-specific solution rather than assuming equivalence with HST.
