Roller Shutters with Integrated Insect Screens
Combining a shutter and retractable insect screen keeps two functions in one coordinated opening. It saves visual clutter, but only when the box, guides, controls and service access are designed for both systems.

01
The two curtains should operate independently
An integrated screen normally retracts into the shutter box on its own track, allowing ventilation with the insect mesh down and shutter up. Confirm the exact operating sequence because not every shutter family accepts the option.
The screen is not a safety guard and must not be used to prevent a child, pet or object falling through an open window. Its purpose is insect control.
02
It is most useful where windows stay open
Bedrooms, kitchens and garden-facing rooms benefit when occupants want evening ventilation without mosquitoes or moths. On frequently used patio doors, a vertical roll-down screen may be less convenient than a dedicated sliding or pleated door screen.
Assess handles, furniture and sill objects. The lower bar needs a clear landing and users must be able to reach it comfortably.
03
Integration affects box size and dimensions
The extra roller, mesh and guide path require space. Maximum width and height, wind exposure and mesh tension are system-specific, so the screen should be selected before the box and opening are finalised.
Check whether adding the screen changes clear glass area, service cover or shutter curtain capacity. A late retrofit into an incompatible box may not be practical.
04
Cleaning and wind care extend service life
Remove dust gently and keep guide channels clear. Do not force a screen that is frozen, obstructed or displaced, and retract it during severe weather when the manufacturer requires.
The mesh and shutter curtain must not be moved into each other's path. Follow the supplied operating instructions and arrange service if the lower bar no longer closes evenly.
05
Confirm compatibility in one quotation
Specify which openings need shutters, screens or both and note whether they are windows or doors. Ask for independent operation, mesh colour, guide arrangement, maximum dimensions and service access.
LUPOL can configure compatible insect-screen options with selected external shutter systems. Ordering both with the window reduces clashes between handles, guides, boxes and façade finishes.
The key takeaway
An integrated screen is valuable on regularly ventilated openings when selected with the shutter from the start. Verify size, independent operation, service access and safe user expectations.
Frequently asked questions
Can an insect screen and shutter be used at the same time?
The systems are independently operated, but the permitted simultaneous positions depend on the product instructions. Do not move either curtain against an obstruction.
Can an integrated insect screen be added later?
Only if the existing shutter box and guides were designed to accept it. In many systems the option must be selected when the shutter is ordered.
Does insect mesh protect a child or pet from falling?
No. Standard insect screens are not guarding or fall-arrest products. Use compliant barriers and supervision where there is a fall risk.
