Vacuum glazing: a thin high-performance option for window renovation

Vacuum insulating glass uses two panes separated by a very thin evacuated space. It can provide strong insulation in a unit much slimmer than conventional insulating glass, which makes it attractive for delicate historic frames. It is not, however, a universal drop-in pane for every old window.

The vacuum limits conduction while micro-spacers support the panes

A conventional unit holds air or gas between its panes. In vacuum glass, extremely low pressure almost eliminates heat transfer through that gas. Atmospheric pressure would push the panes together, so a regular array of tiny supports maintains the gap while a durable edge seal preserves the vacuum.

Small spacer dots and a manufacturing port may be visible. They are not necessarily defects, but inspect a full-size sample in daylight. ISO 19916-1 gives the basic product specification and methods for evaluating thermal performance, sound insulation and durability.

A slim unit can preserve the proportions of a historic window

The main advantage is improved performance without the deep rebate and weight associated with some double- or triple-glazed units. Current Historic England guidance says slim-profile and vacuum-sealed glazing may sometimes be fitted to traditional frames when the alteration preserves their significance.

Do not begin by ordering glass. First inspect timber condition, rebate geometry, hardware, drainage and the value of the existing panes. Protected buildings may require consent, while retaining early glass can be more important than achieving the lowest possible centre-pane value.

Centre-pane Ug is not the Uw of the complete window

Ug describes heat transfer through the central area of the glazing. Occupants experience the complete window: glass, frame, edge, seals and wall joint. A slender historic frame or perimeter thermal bridge can make whole-window Uw quite different from the headline number.

Acoustic performance cannot be inferred from thickness or Ug. It depends on pane construction, asymmetry, laminates, sash airtightness and vents. Ask for declared results for the actual assembly and size, particularly where road or aircraft noise is important.

New glass will not repair a draughty sash or cold wall junction

If air leaks through a distorted sash, failed seal or installation gap, glass replacement alone may disappoint. Survey and repair the timber and hardware first. In some buildings, well-designed internal secondary glazing is a more reversible and effective intervention.

Improved airtightness changes the moisture balance. Condensation may move from the warmer pane to a cold frame or reveal if ventilation is inadequate. Assess ventilation, thermal bridges and heating as part of the upgrade rather than treating it as an isolated glass operation.

The quotation should cover size limits, safety and future service

Manufacturers define sizes, aspect ratios and an edge zone that must not be ground or damaged. Safety glass, unusual shapes and decorative options may not be available in every system. Glazing blocks and sealants must be compatible with the vacuum unit's edge seal.

Request Ug, light and solar transmission, acoustic data, build-up, weight, visible features and the warranty for vacuum retention. Separate frame repair, rebate preparation, glass and finishing costs. Also ask whether a matching replacement unit is likely to remain available if the seal fails years later.
